Here’s what Lawrence DeMonico, Rare Breed’s president, has to say about it:

• You must have a MILSPEC full-auto bolt carrier. This is non-negotiable.
• If you have a lighter weight or semi-auto carrier with the longer slot in the bottom,
• it will not actuate the locking bar and the trigger will not work. Period.
• Every gun is going to be a little different, based on barrel length, gas system, buffer, and bolt carrier weight.
• Some guns will run the trigger right out of the box. Don’t be discouraged
• if yours doesn’t because there are some simple things you can do.
• Lawrence recommends an H3 buffer with a standard carbine spring.
• This is dependent on the next point, which is…
• You have to have enough gas.
• The trigger’s design places a small amount of drag on the bottom of the bolt carrier as it cycles.
• So, you have to factor this in when working out the right combination for your gun.
• Ejection patterns can tell you where your gassing is before you install the FRT-15:
• If you’re ejecting at 1 o’clock, you’re way overgassed; if you’re ejecting at 4 o’clock,
• you have the opposite problem and you’re way undergassed;
• 2:30 or 3 o’clock is the sweet spot and that’s where you want to be before installing the trigger.
• The gas/buffer interaction is something you can play with. If your gun isn’t cycling properly,
• you have some choices: get a lighter H2 or H1 buffer; use hotter ammo; or open up your gas port.
• You can also speed up or slow down your rate of fire by adjusting these combinations.
• As noted above, part of the tuning is your own trigger pull. If you have a death grip on it,
• the bolt won’t function properly, and your gun will malfunction. Keep your trigger pull between five and ten pounds.
• Finally, Lawrence acknowledges that some shooters may have to employ the services of a gunsmith or armorer.
• Again, there are several variables, and every gun is going to be different.

Are there any problems with the Rare Breed trigger?

If you’re researching the FRT-15, you may run across some folks who have had problems with the locking bar spring.

There was an issue caused by stacking tolerances in some ARs,

which resulted in the spring kinking when the locking bar traveled further than it was designed to.

Rare Breed addressed the problem by modifying the housing.

All FRT-15s shipped on or after 1 March 2021 have the modified housing, thus fixing the problem that some people had.

Those with a trigger from before that time were provided with a modified locking bar which also solves the problem.

I saw several people who addressed the problem on their own with homebrew modifications and fixes.

Some worked better than others.

Do what you want, but it looks to me like Rare Breed has addressed the

problem and will take care of anyone who has experienced it.

Keep in mind that these folks are only a small fraction of those who bought the trigger,

so, while it is a problem, it is not widespread and appears to have been fixed.

I offer this more as a PSA than anything.

I have no personal skin in the game when it comes to Rare Breed, but the problem with the locking bar spring came

to my attention and they seem to have handled it conscientiously.

Having said that, the vast majority of customers have had zero issues with the trigger.

While researching, I found a lot more people who loved it than people who didn’t.

And many of the folks who had the locking bar problem either fixed it themselves or let Rare Breed do it for them

, resulting in the happy face.

All-in-all, the FRT-15 looks like a helluva lot of fun. But, as you might expect,

the ability to achieve that higher rate of fire comes with some trade-offs.

Accuracy is number one. If you think you’re gonna roll out there and drive tacks with this thing…well, you’re not.

Depending on your range to target, you’ll be doing well to score a  hit 50 percent of the time. You’re gonna have to practice.

A LOT. Which brings us to the second point, this thing burns through the ammo. If you have it to burn, then good on ya.

But it will take some time and some ammo to get the accuracy you want. Or should want.

Finally, if you want to fire one round at a time, you will have to practice that too.

I saw some guys who had gotten it down, but they had to put in the work.

Rare Breed has sold tens of thousands of these triggers and I’m glad to hear that.

Glad to hear that someone’s innovation and hard work paid off.

Glad that shooters who want a product like that can get it and, hopefully, benefit from it.

Glad the company is backing up its product the right way. But, as I mentioned earlier,

to fire almost as fast as a fully automatic machine gun.

The Rare Breed Trigger FRT-15 trigger group is a forced reset trigger mechanism.

Forced reset triggers operate by causing the action of the bolt carrier group to trip the reset on the trigger automatically.

If you maintain pressure on the trigger after the shot is fired, the bolt will release the hammer on the forward stroke

, allowing the trigger pull to initiate another shot immediately.

Rare Breed Triggers claims that the trigger design meets the letter of the law because the trigger

does perform a full reset during the process.

The trigger must be pulled by the shooter to fire another shot. T

he Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has made the determination that the action

makes the rifle a controlled item under the National Firearms Act (NFA), therefore,

they are considered machine guns and illegal to sell or own.

The Technicalities of Trigger Operation

The controversy stems from a combination of legal definitions, legal interpretations, and some fine

details in how the Rare Breed trigger operates. To really understand, you must have a basic understanding

of all the technical details and definitions that are in play in this issue.

The Standard AR Semi-Automatic Trigger

The semi-automatic trigger group in a civilian legal AR platform rifle consists of several parts that

operate in a very specific manner. Typically, the standard AR trigger group,

technically referred to as the fire control group has the following parts:

• Trigger
• Disconnector
• Sear
• Hook
• Hammer

The Cocking and Disconnect CycleIn operation, each time the trigger is pulled,

it releases the hammer by operating the hook. As soon as the round in the chamber is fired,

the bolt carrier is forced back by gas from the barrel, which ejects the spent casing,

cocks the hammer, and engages the hook. On the return cycle,

the bolt carrier group places an unfired cartridge in the chamber.

The trigger group disconnect prevents the hammer from moving forward until the trigger is released

and the disconnector engages, allowing the trigger pull to disengage the hook for a second shot.

The Rare Breed Trigger Difference

A Rare Breed Trigger group performs all of these functions. However, there is one striking difference

in the steps that are performed during the firing sequence.

This is the cause of the controversy and where interpretations of the BATF rules and regulations lead

to disputes about the legality of the Rare Breed Triggers FRT-15 trigger.

The Firing Cycle Using an FRT-15 Trigger

When you pull the trigger on an AR equipped with a Rare Breed FRT-15 trigger, the initial operations are just

like any other trigger assembly: a trigger pull releases the hammer, which strikes the firing pin and fires the round in the chamber.

Gas comes back down the gas tube and forces the bolt carrier group backward.

This ejects the spent cartridge from the rifle, cocks the hammer, and engages the trigger disconnect.

The Controversial Difference

The action performed by the rare breed trigger assembly occurs on the forward stroke of the bolt carrier group.

At this point, the bolt carrier groups strip a fresh cartridge from the top of the magazine and place

it into the chamber. However, the rare breed trigger is forced forward to the reset point

(also moving the shooter’s trigger finger forward as well).

If you maintain pressure on the trigger as the bolt moves forward, the trigger will release the hammer

almost immediately as the bolt locks. This allows a second shot to be initiated, starting the whole process over.

This allows very rapid fire rates in otherwise semi-automatic weapons.

A Matter of Interpretation – Reading the Rules

The whole controversy boils down to the way the BATF rules and regulations are read and interpreted.

To gain an understanding of the foundation of this legal challenge, you must have some understanding

of the National Firearms Act (NFA) and the BATF stance on the Gun Control Act and how it addresses the term “machine gun.”

The Rare Breed  trigger Response

Rare Breed Triggers refused to ignore the cease and desist order from BATF and continued to

manufacture and sell the FRT-15 triggers. The company’s response came swiftly.

Rare Breed Filed suit against the BATF in federal court, seeking a temporary restraining order against the BATF.

The temporary restraining order was subsequently denied in August 2021.

However, the lawsuit alleges that the BATF violated Rare Breed’s due process rights.

The legal battle is not over and may resume at any time. A lot depends on the political climate

in Washington, DC and how the new Supreme Court interprets Federal law and how

federal rules and regulations are created and enforced.

The BATF Counter Moves

In March of 2022, the BATF sent a letter to all Federal Firearms License Holders informing

them of the BATF stance on forced reset triggers. By anyone’s reading, the letter is vague and

almost impossible to interpret in any logical manner.

There is no mention of Rare Breed FRT-15 triggers specifically. Only inconclusive references to

“some force reset triggers” being machine guns.

The letter further advises anyone in possession of a forced reset trigger to get advice by

contacting the local ATF field Office for interpretation of the trigger and federal law.

Where the Lawsuit Stands Today

As of the date I write this article, the lawsuit filed by Rare Breed Triggers has been

dismissed because the Judge in the federal court holding the case found that Rare Breed FRT 15 Triggers

had not suffered any damages due to the BATF actions, and thus had no standing to bring their lawsuit.

The suit was dismissed without prejudice which means that plaintiff,

Rare Breed Triggers, can re-initiate the lawsuit when and if the company suffers some

irreparable harm from the BATF. It appears that everything is on hold for now.

What Does This Mean for People Who Bought A Rare Breed tigger

At this point, no one is really sure what this is all going to mean for the current owners

of Rare Breed FRT 15 Triggers.

Historically, we can make some assumptions based on what has happened in

the past when the BATF arbitrarily decides something doesn’t meet their definitions.

Take, for instance, bump fire stocks.

The Bump Fire Stock Issue

A bump stock is a special butt stock assembly that, in essence,

allows an AR to ride back and forth due to recoil while the trigger finger is held in a stationary position.

Each forward and backward movement of the rifle due to recoil causes the

trigger to impact against the stationary trigger finger, causing another firing cycle.

On the surface, this seems perfectly legal. Each shot requires the trigger to be pulled,

and the gun will not fire more than one shot if the trigger is pulled and held continually.

Only one shot will fire. But, due to political pressure, the BATF deemed bump stocks to be

“A collection or combination of parts designed and intended to convert a semi-automatic weapon into a machine gun.

” Never mind that the trigger still had to be pulled for every shot.

The rules promulgated by the BATF about bump stocks made it illegal to manufacture, sell, transfer, or own a bump stock.

The stocks were to be destroyed or surrendered to the BATF on short notice or face very stiff federal charges.

Even some of the most liberal legal minds in the country found fault with both the methods and the

interpretation of the BATF in this instance.

Many pundits took the position that the BATF ignored the wording of the statutes that they cited as their authority,

re-interpreted entire parts of the statute, and were creating laws outside of the legislative process.

This debate continues to rage to this day.

Revisiting the Bump Stock Scenario

The whole issue of forced reset triggers smacks of the bump stock situation.

On the surface, based on reading the current laws and statutes, it seems perfectly legal.

But when deemed to be illegal, puts many gun owners in a precarious legal situation

. In fact, several retailers were visited by ATF agents, inventory was confiscated, and company records were seized.

However, I can find no concrete evidence that the ATF ever visited anyone’s home to search for a bump stock.

It seems that ATF is following the same scenario in regard to forced reset triggers.

To date, I can find no evidence that the ATF has done more than issue an official ATF

letter concerning their position on forced reset triggers and ATF regulations.

Some only-firearms retailers are still selling their limited inventories of FRT triggers,

and Rare Breed’s website occasionally still shows the triggers being manufactured and for sale.

Can You Expect a Visit from ATF agents if you Bought a Rare Breed FRT 15 Trigger?

In my opinion, that is highly unlikely. If the ATF follows the usual pattern,

they will do a lot of media making sure everyone is aware of their position and

interpretation of the firearms laws and Rare Breed Triggers.

However, if you get caught with a Rare Breed FRT 15 Trigger installed on an AR rifle,

you could be in serious trouble. In some instances, this type of violation serves as a

stacking charge to go with other charges making the case against you even more serious and harder to defend.

It is true that the ATF works hard at controlling machine guns in civilian hands.

The Legality of Machine Guns

Contrary to popular belief, it is not illegal nor impossible for a civilian shooter to legally own a machine gun in the United States.

There are provisions in the National Firearms Act, the Gun Control Act,

and the Firearm Owners Protection Act that stipulate the requirements for privately owning a machine gun.

None of these legislative acts mentions forced reset trigger groups.

Owning machine guns in the U.S. is difficult, to say the least. It is also almost prohibitively expensive.

The ATF controls the issuance of the legal documents and required tax stamps to purchase and own a machine gun.

Very few firearm retailers have the needed license to handle these transactions and don’t want the

hassles associated with this heavily restricted part of the gun market.

We’ve been receiving a lot of inquiries regarding the Rare Breed FRT-15 triggers and whether they are legal or not.

I would first like to note that I DO NOT have a dog in this fight, and I am not representing either side.

It is also important for me to note that I am also not a technical firearms specialist,

so I can’t tell you specifics of how this trigger works.

What I can do is provide you with information on the FRT-15 trigger,

the differences between a semi-automatic weapon and an automatic weapon, a

nd my opinion on whether you should purchase the FRT-trigger.

Difference Between a Semi-automatic and Automatic Weapon

With a semi-automatic weapon, only one shot is fired every time the trigger is pulled.

The shooter must manually release the trigger and allow it to travel to its reset point under

light spring pressure before the trigger can be pulled again.

In contrast, an automatic weapon fires rounds continuously until the trigger is released.

When the trigger of a fully automatic weapon is pulled and remains depressed,

the firearm will continue to fire repeatedly until the trigger is released, the ammunition is gone, or the firearm is jammed.

The ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives) wants Rare Breed

Triggers to stop selling their FRT-15 trigger. In July of 2021, the ATF served Rare Breed

Triggers with a cease-and-desist order, ordering the company to stop selling its popular

FRT-15 trigger. Rare Breed Triggers refused to comply with the ATF’s demands and filed a lawsuit in federal court against the ATF.

In an initial order, ATF claimed that force reset triggers are machine guns.

The ATF used its own discretion to determine that the FRT-15 is a machine gun.

But Rare Breed Triggers claims the FRT-15 is a perfectly legal semi-automatic trigger

because the trigger must be pulled for every bullet, so it is still semi-automatic.

According to 26 USC 5845(b):
“A machine gun is any weapon which shoots, is designed to shoot, or can be readily restored to shoot,

automatically more than one shot, without manual reloading, by a single function of the trigger.

The term shall also include the frame or receiver of any such weapon, any part designed and

intended solely and exclusively, or combination of parts designed and intended, for use in

converting a weapon into a machine gun, and any combination of parts from which a

machine gun can be assembled if such parts are in the possession or under the control of a person.”

My Legal Opinion – Consider Risk Management

I am not sure how this will play out in the courts, but I want you to understand that you are

DEFINITELY TAKING A RISK if you already have an FRT-15 trigger or you are considering purchasing it.

Now, the courts could decide that the FRT-15 trigger could be perfectly legal

, but if they decide that the FRT-15 trigger is in fact illegal, the ATF

could arrest you and you could be charged with a criminal offense in federal court.

Did you know that if you get a felony conviction on your record in federal court,

 

you will lose your right to possess a firearm forever and will be known as a prohibited possessor for the rest of your life?

What you could be risking if you currently have or are looking to purchase an FRT-15 trigger:
– All of your 2nd Amendment rights
– Your freedom
– Criminal convictions on your record
– Paying a lot of money for a criminal defense attorney

In my opinion, the most cautious thing for you to do is to NOT have a Rare Breed trigger in your possession.

If you are thinking about purchasing an FRT-15 trigger, I think you should not buy it until the courts

decide on whether this trigger is legal or not. If we are talking about your freedom,

I think you should be making a conservative decision when it comes down to things that

could deprive you of your independence.

If you are in Arizona or Hawaii, and you already have the Rare Breed FRT-15 Trigger in

The Rare Breed FRT-15 trigger is an amazing, quality trigger made for the AR15 rifle.

This type of trigger system is as close to machine gun like function as you can legally get

This is a trigger only modification. This modification adds a special, round tip, spring loaded and “self adjusting”

spring reset assembly to your trigger. This allows your trigger to adjust to out of spec or other weapon platform reset points reliably.

This is needed when running 9mm, 22lr and other none standard AR15 rifle types and calibers.

If your RB FRT trigger will not run in your particular rifle, this is probably the reason.

The bolt carrier is not pushing the hammer far enough down to force reset the trigger.

This modification automatically takes up this space with spring pressure to force the trigger

reset as it was designed to do. How to test this: Unload the firearm, cycle the firearm to make sure safe and empty.

Pull and hold the trigger to the rear, hand cycle the firearm. If the trigger is not forced forward when cycling,

this modification is needed. If you are getting spotty resets, this modification will probably illuminate

that as well and make the trigger run more consistent. The end result is smoother, more reliable operation while firing.

By now, you’ve probably heard of the Rare Breed FRT-15 Trigger, if only because of the company’s

coming fight with the Feds over the attempt to brand the trigger a “machine gun.”

If you haven’t heard about that mess, we have a separate follow-up article on the way to break it down.

For now, though, let’s look at exactly what the FRT-15 trigger is and what it does.

If you already know this stuff, you’re excused and can go to recess early. If not, read on.

 

FRT stands for “Forced Reset Trigger.”

The “15” part means that it’s designed for the AR-15 platform chambered in 5.56 NATO or .300 Blackout.

It won’t work in AKs, SCARs, or anything else. Its function is dependent on the design of the MILSPEC AR bolt carrier.

It MAY work in an AR-9, depending on how the gun is set up. An FRT-9 (for AR-9s) and FRT-10 (for AR-10s)

are in the works but not yet ready for manufacture. Rare Breed says that the FRT-15 will NOT work in an AR

chambered in .22 Long Rifle, but I saw a guy who had one tuned to 80 to 90 percent reliability on YouTube.

You decide for yourself, but when the manufacturer warns against it…

Rare Breed is careful to point out that the FRT-15 may require some tuning to any gun in which it’s installed. “

Tuning,” in this case, refers to gassing and making sure you have the proper buffer and bolt carrier. More on that in a minute.

The term “forced reset” is an accurate descriptor of how the trigger works. Your standard AR trigger resets

when the shooter releases rearward pressure, thus allowing the trigger mechanism to move forward,

whereupon another press of the trigger starts the whole process over. Like you didn’t know that.

The FRT-15 uses a newly designed hammer that, as it is cocked by the bolt carrier, forces the trigger

forward to the reset, along with the shooter’s finger, as the bolt moves forward to chamber the next round.

A locking bar prevents the trigger from being pressed again until the bolt cycle is complete.

By maintaining pressure on the trigger, the shooter can take advantage of the hammer-assisted

reset to dramatically increase the rate of fire. Or not. Based on what I have seen, with some practice,

the shooter can manipulate the trigger to fire only one shot or the equivalent of a short burst.

Keep in mind that the locking bar’s pressure on the trigger prevents another press until the bolt cycles.

Indeed, it is the completion of the bolt cycle that releases the locking bar. Between the hammer and the locking bar,

the shooter cannot simply hold the trigger to the rear. It must execute its function for each round fired.

So, while the FRT-15 is capable of a prodigious rate of fire, it is still a semi-automatic trigger.

Now, back to the part about tuning your gun so the FRT-15 operates properly.

Here’s what Lawrence DeMonico, Rare Breed’s president, has to say about it:

• You must have a MILSPEC full-auto bolt carrier
• This is non-negotiable. If you have a lighter weight or
• semi-auto carrier with the longer slot in the bottom, it will not
• actuate the locking bar and the trigger will not work. Period.
• Every gun is going to be a little different, based on barrel length, gas system, buffer, and bolt carrier weight.
• Some guns will run the trigger right out of the box. Don’t be discouraged
• if yours doesn’t because there are some simple things you can do.
• Lawrence recommends an H3 buffer with a standard carbine spring.
• This is dependent on the next point, which is…
• You have to have enough gas. T
• he trigger’s design places a small amount of drag on the bottom of the bolt carrier as it cycles.
• So, you have to factor this in when working out the right combination for your gun.
• Ejection patterns can tell you where your gassing is before you install the FRT-15: If you’re ejecting at
• 1 o’clock, you’re way overgassed; if you’re ejecting at 4 o’clock, you have the opposite problem and you’re way
• undergassed; 2:30 or 3 o’clock is the sweet spot and that’s where you want to be before installing the trigger.
• The gas/buffer interaction is something you can play with. If your gun isn’t cycling properly, you have some
• choices: get a lighter H2 or H1 buffer; use hotter ammo; or open up your gas port. You can also speed up
• or slow down your rate of fire by adjusting these combinations.
• As noted above, part of the tuning is your own trigger pull. If you have a death grip on it, the bolt won’t
• function properly, and your gun will malfunction. Keep your trigger pull between five and ten pounds.
• Finally, Lawrence acknowledges that some shooters may have to employ the services of a gunsmith or armorer.
• Again, there are several variables, and every gun is going to be different.

Are there any problems with the Rare Breed trigger?

If you’re researching the FRT-15, you may run across some folks who have had problems with the locking bar spring.

There was an issue caused by stacking tolerances in some ARs, which resulted in the spring kinking when the

locking bar traveled further than it was designed to. Rare Breed addressed the problem by modifying the housing.

All FRT-15s shipped on or after 1 March 2021 have the modified housing, thus fixing the problem that some people had.

Those with a trigger from before that time were provided with a modified locking bar which also solves the problem.

I saw several people who addressed the problem on their own with homebrew modifications and fixes.

Some worked better than others. Do what you want, but it looks to me like Rare

Breed has addressed the problem and will take care of anyone who has experienced it.

Keep in mind that these folks are only a small fraction of those who bought the trigger,

so, while it is a problem, it is not widespread and appears to have been fixed. I offer this more as a PSA than anything.

I have no personal skin in the game when it comes to Rare Breed, but the problem with the locking bar spring came

to my attention and they seem to have handled it conscientiously.

Having said that, the vast majority of customers have had zero issues with the trigger. While researching, I found a

lot more people who loved it than people who didn’t. And many of the folks who had the locking bar problem either

fixed it themselves or let Rare Breed do it for them, resulting in the happy face.

All-in-all, the FRT-15 looks like a helluva lot of fun. But, as you might expect, the ability to achieve that higher rate of

fire comes with some trade-offs. Accuracy is number one. If you think you’re gonna roll out there and drive tacks

with this thing…well, you’re not. Depending on your range to target, you’ll be doing well to score a  hit 50 percent of the time.

You’re gonna have to practice.

A LOT. Which brings us to the second point, this thing burns through the ammo. If you have it to burn, then good on ya.

But it will take some time and some ammo to get the accuracy you want. Or should want.

Finally, if you want to fire one round at a time, you will have to practice that too.

I saw some guys who had gotten it down, but they had to put in the work.

Rare Breed has sold tens of thousands of these triggers and I’m glad to hear that. Glad to hear that

 

someone’s innovation and hard work paid off. Glad that shooters who want a product like that can get it and, hopefully,

benefit from it. Glad the company is backing up its product the right way. But, as I mentioned earlier, the AFT (snicker)

is trying to throw cold water on everyone’s fun. More on that soon. Hopefully, my editor will insert a link to that article

My Feelings and Responses

Personally, I believe the BATF has gone way past its authority as a government agency in this matter.

No one but Congress has the authority to enact federal law, but many of the rules and regulations

that the BATF uses are created without any legislative action. I also believe that political agendas drive many of these actions.

This is not a legal opinion by any stretch, but it is the personal opinion of a patriotic gun-owning American.

I must admit in closing that as of this minute, you probably should conclude that, in the eyes of the

BATF and many others, Rare Breed Triggers are not legal to own.

This is in spite of the fact that Rare Breed continues to manufacture and sell the FRT-15 triggers.

RARE BREED CHALLENGES THE ATF

Rare Breed’s owner and lead counsel Kevin Maxwell filed court documents in early August 2021, arguing that per the ATF’s definition,

a machine gun must fire more than one shot by a single function of the trigger – which the FRT-15 does not do.

While the FRT-15 does enable users to fire a firearm quicker, the company says

the trigger assembly is still a semi-automatic trigger capable of only one round per trigger pull.

“In other words, a ‘machinegun’ is not defined under federal law by how fast it can fire –

but rather by the method in which it can fire fast,” the filing says.

Further, Rare Breed clarifies that the FRT-15 does not act as an auto sear –

a tool most often seen alongside machine guns resulting in full-auto function.

“Thus, by definition, the FRT-15 does not make a semiautomatic rifle into a ‘machinegun.

’ Rather, the only thing the FRT-15 does is enable a shooter to accomplish a faster follow-up

shot because of the speed at which the trigger resets.”
