History of the Canadian SKS
In the late 1940s, Canada was looking to replace its aging Lee-Enfield bolt-action rifles. The Canadian government looked to the Soviet Union for a replacement and purchased a large number of SKS-45 rifles. These rifles were then modified to meet Canadian military standards and were designated as the C1 rifle.
The Canadian military used the C1 rifle from the 1950s to the 1980s. During this time, the rifle saw action in a number of conflicts, including the Korean War and the Vietnam War. The Canadian SKS rifle traces its origins back to the Soviet SKS-45, a semi-automatic carbine developed in the aftermath of World War II. We explore the historical context of the SKS rifle and its adoption by the Canadian military, shedding light on its role and significance in Canadian firearm history.
The history of the Canadian SKS rifle is closely tied to the Soviet SKS design, which was developed by Sergei Gavrilovich Simonov in the late 1940s. The SKS, which stands for Samozaryadny Karabin sistemy Simonova (Semi-Automatic Carbine, Simonov’s System), was initially adopted by the Soviet Union in 1949.
In the early 1950s, Canada began exploring options to replace their aging Lee-Enfield rifles with a more modern semi-automatic rifle. The Canadian military evaluated several designs, including the FN FAL and the M1 Garand, but ultimately decided to adopt a variant of the SKS. The Canadian government secured a license from the Soviet Union to manufacture the SKS rifle domestically.
The Canadian production of the SKS began at the Long Branch Arsenal in Ontario in 1955. The rifles were produced under the designation “7.62mm Rifle, Model SKS, C.I.L. (Canadian Industries Limited)”. These rifles were manufactured using both Canadian-made parts and components imported from the Soviet Union. The Canadian SKS closely resembled the Soviet SKS in terms of design and functionality.
One notable modification made to the Canadian SKS was the addition of a permanently attached bayonet that folded under the barrel. This modification was made to comply with Canadian firearms regulations, which required military rifles to have a minimum barrel length of 18.5 inches or, if shorter, a permanently attached bayonet.
The Canadian SKS rifles were primarily issued to the Canadian Armed Forces for training purposes and reservist use. They were also exported to other countries, including commercial sales to civilians. Over the years, surplus Canadian SKS rifles have become popular among firearms collectors and enthusiasts.
It’s important to note that the Canadian SKS production ceased in the late 1950s, and the rifles are no longer manufactured in Canada. However, surplus rifles and parts are still available on the market today.

Ammofount.com about three
weeks ago. It was delivered to my
home. Just dissembled, cleaned (the
costomline removed with mineral
spirits) and re-assembled it. This gun
is beautiful. All serial numbers all
match. The wood stock looks great
with just a few scratches. No rust
anywhere. It is time to get one now!

Absolutely mint beautiful peice of
history! Pro tip take the floating firing
pin completely apart to clean
cosmoline, it’s easy to do. 1/8 punch
for the small pin

skepticism about shipping times, but I

reached me in record time, and it was
in impeccable condition.

The Canada SKS was a great purchase,
and I can’t say same about their
customer service. I had a few inquiries
about my order, and they were slow but
helpful with responses. but, my rifle
arrived well

Just picked one up in August, have
been through about 160 rounds. Best
investment you can make! Have only
shot the Norinco 7.62 non-corrosive out
of it and it’s been a breeze. Bit of work
getting the Cosmaline off but well
worth it. All matching parts. This thing
got my wife into shooting! Very
minimal kick with the gas system.
Needless to say, Get it!
Micheal calcote –
Heavy barrel lug, barrel threaded into
receiver, not pinned like later Chinese
SKSs. I’ve received all the best, most
desirable features!

Lovely delivery
Jerry williams –
have been very pleased with my
purchase. For a 50 year old surplus
battle rifle, it is in excellent working
condition. The SKS is such a fun
firearm to shoot, and its low cost
ammo allows you to do a lot of
shooting! delivery was fast

The top-feed magazine and hinged
floor plate make maintenance a breeze.
I’m not an expert, but this SKS rifle has
been a fun challenge to work on. Great
value for the quality!
Craig lojay –
I purchased the Canada SKS for a
restoration project, and I’m thrilled
with the results. The hardwood stock is
beautifully crafted, and the 20″ barrel
with the folding bayonet gives it an
authentic look. A must-have for
enthusiasts!

I bought this Chinese SKS. With low
expectations as i ordered over the
internet so they could have just sent a
junk rifle. Once it arrived i opened.
Checked out the condition and its new.
Looks never fired.

Bought the gun last week from
canadaammunition.com while on sale.
It was in great shape all numbers
matched. I however had to clean the
rifle as there is cosmoline throughout
the gun. Overall great value but with
the new gun ban who really knows at
this time.

I picked one up after seeing a couple of
range buddies’ Type 56’s. These are
nothing like the previous well-worn
Type 56’s sold in Canada. These are
unissued and unfired for the most
part: at least I haven’t seen or heard of
any dogs in this last batch. Have had
Russian Tula’s before, but these
honestly are like new rifles.

exception of the magazine. Staff was
great to work with! As they brought out
a few for me to choose from. Came just
as advertised. Well worth the price!

I was pleasantly surprised by how fast
my Canada SKS arrived! Not only was
the rifle in great condition, but the
shipping was lightning-quick. Kudos to
the excellent customer service team
for their prompt responses to my

I bought this SKS as a unique
challenge, and it has exceeded my
expectations. The 20″ barrel provides
accuracy, and the folding bayonet is a
fantastic feature. It’s a great addition
to any collection.

was a little bit upset when
purchasing this sks, since this is a
surplus and everything is
unpredictable. But I did hear a lot of
story about the recent Chinese SKS
batch imported to Canada is the best
in quality. So I thought why not give it
a try. When it arrived, the rifle looks
absolutely stunning, the condition is
almost brand new. I recommend that if
you want a good SKS, it’s the time
NOW!

There is over 90% blueing on mine, and the stock is solid, with assorted dings and nicks. The trigger is incredible, I can’t wait to shoot it! If you are interested in surplus guns, and don’t have a Canadian sks yet, you really owe it to yourself to try one. This thing costs less than an absolute bottom of the barrel AR-15! Go for it!
Angelo carruthers –
I ordered G-VG and the rifle I received is on the high end of expectations. It showed up with matching serial numbers, sling, and muzzle cover. The action and bore are in perfect shape and I couldn’t be happier with my purchase.
Karen zoller –
I own and shoot several other Canadian made rifles. I purchased this firearm to add to my collection. I chose the good to very good condition grade. I feel the rifle I received is in the middle of that grading system. The stock in in nice condition, no cracks or arsenal repairs. The bore is bright and shiny. The red knob of the bolt handle was broken but still useable. After cleaning and inspecting it I brought it to the range and while firing it with swiss GP 11 cartridges I noticed the magazine would not feed smoothly. Comparing my K-11 magazine to the purchased 1911, I believe the follower spring has weakened, ultimately fixable. My point here, You take a gamble. If you want one buy one. Just realize if you purchase the “good” or even the “very good” option you may still have some minor issues.
Dilmore –
I was pleasantly surprised by the accuracy of this historical rifle. The rifling was worn but not wore out! It a great shooter. Just wished I’d have purchased one of these earlier! Just a lot of fun!!
Lori teftt –
Purchased “good-very good”. Not sure what I got. Rifle arrived in a mangled box. Best I can tell, it may or may not have picked up some new dents/dings. That, and the crown had a ding in it regardless of the muzzle guard that came with it (yep, that’ll buff right out). Haven’t shot it yet. Will see in the Fall how the dinged crown provides stellar accuracy

I have had, and still have several T-bolts in .22 and .22 Mag. scoped with Nikons, and the best I could afford at the time I purchased them. A friend and squirrel hunting ‘mentor’ introduced me to them. He would always show up wearing ragged clothes, looking impoverished, then whip out his T-Bolt and proceed to limit out while most of us were still putting our boots on. He shot left handed. As close to squirrel murder as I have ever seen a hunter get. He was good. Always showed up with a frying pan, too. My favorite T-Bolt is the .22 Mag…. you never know when you are going to see a coyote out and about during daylight hours. Every one I have ever hit has been a head shot right through the ear into the brain. The heavy 40 to 50 grain bullets my guns seem to favor. Buy one, you and your kids won’t regret it.
David lott –
This rifle gives me sub half inch 5 shot groups at 50 yards with any bulk ammo I run through it. The action cycles much faster than the standard bolt gun. This rifle is fun at the range and would be a great squirrel gun.
Jolene king –
I purchased a “Fair to Good.” I rate it very good personally.
Gray –
I own a Surgeon 300 mag that was my weekly shooter until I bought this gun. Weekly shoot it out to 1k. I’ve run it with a break and suppressed with no issue. I have shot DMR comps with it, and it’s always fast, fun, and accurate. I’m about 2000 rds in and its still a 1moa gun (I can squeeze em to 3/4). I highly recommend them.
John –
I have been looking for 6.5 Creedmoore rifle for a while. I shoot off of my left shoulder and with the ability to switch the bolt handle to either side I decided to get this rifle. The straight pull bolt take some getting use to but once you use it for a while it becomes natural. Although the 20 inch barrel is listed as medium it makes up most of the 8.5 lbs of the rifle’s weight. I use a suppressor so the shorter Bbl. is more handy than the longer standard barrels. I like that you can easily change the length of pull and comb hight of the stock and found a combination that fit me perfectly. This rifle shoots everything I have fed it accurately. It keeps everything under an inch and love the Hornady 123 gr. bullets giving me three shot groups just over a quarter inch (.271 to be exact). I would not want to take this rifle on a hunt where I had to carry it all day, but for stand and blind hunting it is hard to beat, especially if you know that f you do your part you will hit your target. Savage states that the four round magazine is the largest offered. I would like more capacity if I get into a sounder of hogs.
