blackhorn 209 canada powder Usage Recommendations:

  • Loading Procedures: When using Blackhorn 209 canada powder, it’s essential to follow the manufacturer’s recommended loading procedures precisely. This includes measuring the appropriate powder charge, seating the bullet firmly, and ensuring a proper ignition source, such as a shotgun primer or a 209 primer.
  • Optimal Bullet Selection: Blackhorn 209 performs well with a variety of bullet designs. However, it’s recommended to consult the manufacturer’s guidelines or conduct load development to determine the optimal bullet weight and style for your specific firearm.
  • Cleaning and Maintenance: While Blackhorn 209 powder produces less fouling compared to traditional black powder, regular cleaning and maintenance are still necessary. Follow proper cleaning procedures, as outlined by the manufacturer, to maintain the performance and longevity of your muzzleloader.

blackhorn 209 canada powder Safety Considerations:

  • Storage: Store Blackhorn 209 canada powder in a cool, dry place, away from heat, sparks, or open flames. Follow local regulations regarding the storage of propellants and keep them out of the reach of children.
  • Handling: Always handle Blackhorn 209 powder with care, following safety guidelines provided by the manufacturer. Avoid smoking or using ignition sources near the powder.
  • Ignition: Ensure that your muzzleloader is in good working condition and that the ignition system is properly installed and functioning. Improper ignition can lead to dangerous situations.
  • Load Data: Use reliable and up-to-date load data from trusted sources, such as the manufacturer’s website or reputable reloading manuals. Start with the minimum recommended loads and gradually work up while monitoring for any signs of excessive pressure.

Not cheap but worth the price of admission! I’m using this in a CVA Optima V2. I had to get the blackhorn breech plug. Lights fine with STS Remington primers. It’s a lot cleaner than any other bp substitute I’ve used. Not only that, but it’s noticably hotter than bp substitutes. And that’s all fine and dandy on its own, but then you factor in accuracy, and you got something special. I’m shooting 75gr of this under either a Barnes T-EZ, or federal bor lock and accuracy has been excellent, and clean up is easy. I definitely understand why it’s so popular.

  2. Vanammo

You can use something other than 209 primers. I have a T/C Black Diamond and I use musket caps and it never fails. The accuracy is phenomenal, less than an inch at 100 yds using Speer 270 gr deep curl.

  3. Vanammo

Blackhorn delivers great accuracy and velocities in my rifles. Really like not having to clean gun immediately after firing. However it has gotten crazy expensive. The new containers are 8 oz not 10 oz that Midway lists. Alabama only has a 5 day muzzle loader season so I don’t use a lot of it.

  4. Vanammo

Has been a great powder in my TC Encore. This is my 6th year hunting with the same 10oz can and it has been remarkably shelf stable and consistent over time. I suspect that folks who have trouble with it are either using the wrong primer or have the wrong breach plug. Keep the flash hole clean and use a hot 209 primer (not a 209 muzzle loader primer!) and you will never look back.

  5. Vanammo

Been using this stuff for years now and I cannot see using anything else in a high-performance in-line muzzleloader. Shooting it in my 45 caliber Omega, using Precision Rifle’s 45 caliber sabots and 35 caliber 190 grain lead ballistic tips, with 120 grains of this powder and the 25 ACP conversion breach plug with small rifle magnum primers. Typical three shot groups at 100 yards are just under an inch. Loading is somewhat of a tight fit but the accuracy is worth it. I can usually shoot as many shots as I want and not have to swab the bore between shots. With the velocities I’m getting, I’m basically shooting a 35 Whelan and have made shots all the way out to and including 300 yards. One item of concern is that you do have to use a hot 209 primer and not a milder muzzleloading type or a .410 primer. It says so right on the container and they are correct.

  6. Vanammo

I had reviewed this as a muzzleloader propellant a while back and was impressed, so I decided to update it with my results in cartridges as well. I recently decided to just play with it a bit in 327 Federal, and the results were honestly pretty shocking. It turned out to be THE most accurate powder I’ve ever used in it with 115gr cast bullets. The attached picture was a group shot off a bench at 25 yards. I did try it in 32 S&W Long cases, too. The results were not as impressive as the 327, but the accuracy was still pretty decent. Cleanup was no worse than a day of shooting something dirty like moderate loaded Unique or Bullseye. The brass did tarnish inside a fair bit, but the outsides cleaned right up just fine after a few hours in the tumbler. So, if you want to play with some smokey reloads without the hassle of black powder cleanup, this stuff is a pretty good, albeit expensive option.

90 gr in my Lymans Great Plains 54 and in my old sharon barrel TC Hawken 50 with 209 magsparks on both. Tight groups at 100 and PLENTY of power. 20 shots each at the range and no cleaning until the end. Great Stuff. Lets you shoot more at the range. Highly recommend!

  8. Vanammo

Been using Triple Seven for years. Always reload after hitting animal even if looks stone dead. Last elk and last antelope were high lung hits, shot the elk second time through both lungs, then once more when it laid down. By fourth reload could barely get the sabot down the dirty barrel, left too breathless to shoot straight, good I didn’t have to. Tried this stuff with Thor bullets, five reloads easy, I’ll never go back. Save shipping and hazard costs and buy at Sportsmans’ W.

  9. Vanammo

This is by far the best powder for muzzleloaders in my opinion. It burns clean enough that it is not necessary to clean after each shot, and it’s very consistent.

I’d skeptically read the reviews of this product as it sounded too good to be true. I got my first dozen shots off today and I’m happy to report the cleanliness aspects of their claims appear to be quite true. Ignition was instant. Smoke seemed minimal and the smell greatly reduced even when cleaning. I remember reading one review mentioning that a tighter sabot/bullet combination may be needed to improve accuracy as there isn’t enough accumulated residue left in the barrel to snug them down for tight groups. I’m inclined to agree. I support that assertion by noticing that bullet loading pressure never appeared to increase shot to shot. I’ve become accustomed to swabbing between shots with my previous powders, but I resisted today and the load pressure didn’t seem to ever significantly increase. Additionally, my favorite load – a Hornady sabot with .430 XTP’s (200 grain)appeared to spray and never settled in. My conclusion is hardly scientific, but the correlation seems to make sense. I’ve no access to a chrono so I can’t vouch for velocity, but my “seat of the pants” take on recoil is that it’s quite comparable to it’s not so clean competition. Admittedly, my limited use today is hardly a conclusive test, but for those of you thinking about trying something “too good to be true”, I’m reasonably confident that this may actually be the real thing. If I find the magic sabot/bullet combination, I suspect I’ll use this stuff as long as it’s available. Enjoy!

I was working up loads in 4 different muzzleloaders all with 209 system. I figured I would give this powder a try. The 4 muzzleloaders are an T/C Encore, T/C Omega, Traditions Pursuit and CVA Kodiak. First trip to the range was a disaster, multiple hang fires in all guns. I gave all 4 guns a good cleaning paying a lot of attention to the breach plugs and using a drill bit making sure all flash channels are clear. I also swap my Winchester primers for the recommended Federal 209A primers. Don’t know what I am doing wrong but still getting hang fires in all 4 guns. On the plus side when the gun fires I am getting the best groups ever. I can shoot a pound of Triple 7 and never get a hang fire so that is going to be my powder of choice.

this is great powder. I have been using BH 209 for about 9 years. I gave up the crud ring, smoke and the smell of the 777 , Pyrodex, White Hots, Jim Shockeys Gold. BH 209 is cleaner, faster, easier to clean up with regular oil based gun cleaner. You get multiple shots without having to clean between shots. No corrosiveness, will work in any weather. The down side is it is costly in my area Cabelas. I buy from Midway USA, multiple containers. Even with the cost of shipping and hazmat it is less expensive the purchasing from the local stores in my area. Great powder, I would recommend it to all black powder shooters. check wit Western Powders to insure that you have a breech plug that is compatable with BH 209.

  29. Craig logal

This a a great product. The barrel stays clean after prolonged use and the loaded sabots just keep sliding down the barrel. Clean up is fast and easy with most any barrel cleaner used for high power rifle bullets.

  30. Harry Kennedy

I’ve been using this product since it came out with great success. It’s results are very consistent and it’s the cleanest burning muzzleloader powder I’ve found. You can also use standard gun cleaning solvents/lubricants to maintain your firearm rather than the messy and less effective water-based junk.

  31. Hazel countermine

Best powder out there! Always fires, very clean and allows for 8-10 shots with minimal fowling, great for hunting!

  32. Curtis jones

Shoots great out of my T/C encore! Very accurate.

  33. Linda dinaro

This powder made a fair shooting muzzle loader a tack driver.

  34. Christopher sarauw

I weigh my charges before testing at the range for uniformity. This is the only powder that I use due to the ease of cleaning and the ability to fire multiple rounds without cleaning.

  35. Lena lobdell

Greatest kept secret out there. Shoots like smokeless! I shoot 325 gr .45 cal Hornady FTX Leverevolution bullets in a .50 cal sabot over 120 gr vol BH209. 1,750+ FPS and good groups!!

  36. Susan vanearsa

This is my second year using Blackhorn 209. I am sold. It is cleaner shooting, more powerful and more accurate than pyrodex. I took two doe last year at 180 yards using 100 grains behind a TC sabot and a 240 grn Hornady XTP bullet. It shoots 1″ at 100 out of my CVA optima. It is more expensive but well worth the price.

  37. Hopkins earl

BLACKHORN 209 allows us to load-n-shoot like chain smokers all day long without experiencing the fouled barrel after 1-3 shots! Perfectly consistent ease of reloading from shot #2 to infinity! Well perhaps shot #2 until “dry-wallet” sets in; getting to be an expensive range hobby. This product will not hang/misfire in any climate if one simply takes an 1/8″ drill bit, positioned between their index & thumb and manually auger the ash from the breech flash channel before the BIG DAY. Even though you can see light through the 0.030 flash hole, you’d be suprised how cruddy the chimney can be! And that goes for any 209 primer regardless of propellant used (however the Blackhorn 209, being nitrocellulose based, does require much more fire & pressure in the primer department than do the “sugar” based products w/ water clean-up). Some claim it is corrosive? Judge for yourself. Nitro based with solvent clean up. Hmmmmmmm. Gotta be better than disolving cotton-candy residue by soaking the rifle in the bath tub (or spit patching just to reload) – would’nt you think?

  38. Trisha Nathalie

ALLOWS YOU TO JUST KEEP SHOOTING AS MUCH AS YOU WANT . NO CLEANING BETWEEN SHOTS AT ALL.

  39. Charles smalley

Best muzzy powder, bar none. Nothing else is close. The very first time you shoot it, you know your world just changed. Very little smoke, smell, ash or grime. Shoots like a rifle with a modern cartridge and cleans like the same. While not as completely non-corrosive as a typical smokeless load, it’s far and away less corrosive than BP or the other substitutes. Check your local laws before hunting with this powder, though. Some short-sighted states have decided that this powder isn’t primative enough for their muzzle loading seasons.

  40. Joseph Tranzillo

The best powder I have used for my TC Impact. Use 90grains below a factory second’s Product #: 151908 250gr muzzleloading bullet with Harvester Muzzleloading 50 Caliber Crushed Rib Sabot for 45 Caliber Bullets Product #: 448726. The result is satisfaction

  41. Theodore Jackson

I used this in a traditions pursuit UL XLT. Very easy to clean and very accurate. Much better then pyrodex to clean. I just used my shooters choice cleaner that I used on my rifles and the barrel is clean as could be. At 50 yards I was cutting holes with 75 grains(weight) and 295 grain hollow point powerbelts.

  42. Michael Meier

Best stuff ever. Glad I made the change from Triple 7. Brought my groups in from 3 to 4 inches at 100yrds to less then an inch. Will not use anything else now. It really lived up to all the positive reviews. Try it and you’ll love it.

  43. Angela carruthers

The best powder on the market, bar none. No fouling, no rotten eggs, and powerful. No more hassles. Luv it.

  44. Zafron zoller

This is the best powder I have used. It needs a hot primer in order to get reliable ignition. The volume measure doesn’t match the weighed out meausure however. When I weigh out 85 grains it fills the powder tube at 80 grains. It gives me the same perfomance with 85 grains as with 100 grains of other substitute powders. I have taken several whitetails at about 75 yards and it is very effective. Cleans up well.

  45. Maureen Dilmore

This powder is the best that I have tried. Shot many others, low smoke, easy cleaning tight groups . Only thing I did not like was less than a pound and high price over other brands.

  46. Lorid teffdt

If they quit making this, I will quit shooting my in-line. Truly a fantastic powder for a hunter or shooter who wants a cleaner rifle and less time worrying about corrosion. Bullet lands wherever my crosshairs are and gun is a breeze to clean after. Pet load for my T/C Impact is 110 grains under a 250 grain Barnes Spitfire. Believe the hype and try this out. Expensive, but just the 10 oz can will yield over 50 shots with 100 grain charges. Clean, accurate, and quite potent based on recoil and two dead deer.

  47. Caquleen Jackson

Blackhorn 209 is the real deal! After trying a few different powders (pellet and loose), and being left with having to swab my bore after every 2-3 shots I decided to spend the extra $ and buy a 10oz bottle of 209…I shoot every weekend for fun so I wanted to see if this powder could perform half as good as it claims…took it to the range over this past weekend and all I can say is WOW!!!…1″ groups at 100 yards, some of my shots literally looked like they went in same hole…and as far as the “cleanest burning powder on the market”, that’s the understatement of the year…after 20 rounds down range I still didn’t have to swab the bore…the 20th round went down the bore just as easy as the 1st…that’s unheard of in the black powder world…cleanup at home after shooting has never been easier either…I know this review may seem like I work for Blackhron but trust me I’m just your average muzzleloader enthusiast…FYI, I have a TC Triumph Bone Collector with a Nikon Inline XR BDC 300 mounted on a TC Maxima Scope Base and TC Maxima Quick Release Rings and I’m shooting Hornady 300 grain FPB’s seated on 100 grains of BH 209 with CCI 209M primers…these primers are a must have to make sure you get proper ignition every time you pull the trigger…you couldn’t offer me a blank check to use any other combo of bullets, powder, and primers…or a different gun/scope for that matter…happy shooting!!!
