444 Marlin ammo Overview:

what is 444 marlin ammo

The 444 Marlin ammo is a centerfire rifle cartridge designed specifically for lever-action rifles. It is used primarily for hunting medium and large-sized game such as deer, boar, elk, and black bear. It is a powerful, hard-hitting round that can penetrate deeper into game and deliver a lethal shot, making it the ideal choice for hunters that need to take down big game animals. Its recoil is manageable, and its flat trajectory makes it easy to use at both short and long range. 444 Marlin ammo is widely available and can be used in any lever-action rifle chambered for the round.

444 marlin ammo such as Hornady LEVERevolution Ammunition 444 Marlin 265 Grain FTX Ever since its introduction in 2006,

444 marlin ammo has brought grandpa’s lever action rifle out of retirement and turned it into a firearm everyone is shooting.

Featuring a soft polymer flex tip, it’s tough enough to stand up to a jacketed bullet, but soft enough so it won’t dent the primer of the round in front of it or cause accidental firing in a lever gun.

This new technology makes LEVERevolution cartridges safe in tubular magazines.

444 marlin ammo features up to 40% more energy than traditional flat point loads and travels up to 250 fps faster.

Feed your lever gun with a box today! This ammunition is new production, non-corrosive, in boxer primed, reloadable brass cases.

This 444 Marlin Ammo is a caliber that is almost always chambered into a lever-action rifle.

It’s a close to mid-range hunting rifle, with an effective range out to about 200 yards, making it an excellent “woods rifle” or “brush gun” for hunting deer, bear, and moose in North America.

A 444 bullet can be found from 240gr to 300gr, with an average muzzle velocity of 2,100 fps (feet per second) and muzzle energy of 2,800 ft-lbs. (foot-pounds).

With proper shot placement, that’s definitely stopping and dropping power.

advantages of 444 marlin ammo

The 444 Marlin ammo has several advantages for hunters. It is a powerful round capable of taking down large game with a single shot, and its flat trajectory makes it easy to use at short or long range. It is also relatively low-recoiling so it can be used effectively without having to worry about excessive felt recoil. Lastly, its availability across the U.S. and its ability to be used in any lever-action rifle chambered for the round make 444 Marlin ammo a great choice for any big game hunter looking for an effective and reliable weapon combination.

disadvantages of 444 marlin ammo

One disadvantage of 444 Marlin ammo is that its high power and deep penetration make it difficult to use in certain areas, such as those with thick vegetation or other physical barriers. It also has strong recoil, which can be uncomfortable for some. Additionally, since 444 Marlin is primarily used for big-game hunting, the ammo is often more expensive than other types of rifle ammo.

applications of 444 marlin ammo

444 Marlin ammo is primarily used for hunting medium to large game animals, such as whitetail deer, elk, and moose. It is also suitable for target shooting and general plinking. Due to its power and penetration capabilities, 444 Marlin is perfect for long-range shooting, and can be used for both single shots and rapid-fire applications. It is also a popular choice for precision rifle matches and benchrest shooting.

who invented 444 marlin ammo

444 Marlin ammo was designed by gun and ammunition designer John Browning in 1895. It was initially intended for use in lever-action rifles, and was developed to be a powerful, fast-acting round for hunting medium to large-sized game. The cartridge was officially released in 1964 by Marlin Firearms and has since become a popular choice for large game hunting in the United States.

Several years ago at a writer seminar, Marlin announced the return of the Marlin 444, which had been out of production since 2011.
Unfortunately, during early production and testing, the company realized the rifle wasn’t ready for prime time.
Now it is. Introduced in 1965 with the .
It uses . 44-caliber bullets that are 0.429 to 0.430 inches in diameter: the same as those used in the . 44 Magnum.
Marlin developed a lever-action rifle for the new cartridge from a slightly modified Marlin 336 — a classic lever gun.
You must be 21 years or older to order ammunition.

History of 444 Marlin Ammo:

In 1964, Marlin Firearms and Remington Arms joined forces to develop a cartridge that filled the gap created by the lack of lever action rifles chambered in .45-70.

The result was the .444 Marlin, which was chambered in the acclaimed Model 336 lever action rifle.

To develop the cartridge, designers from Marlin and Remington started with a .44 Magnum case, lengthened it by nearly an inch and capped it with a jacketed soft point bullet weighing 240 grains.

The bullet actually has a diameter of 0.429 inches, the same as a .44 Magnum bullet. But similarities to the .44 Magnum end there, as the performance of the .444 Marlin is on another level entirely.

The .444 Marlin is currently sold with bullets weighing between 240 and 300 grains.

The design of these bullets are soft points, flat noses or hollow points. Muzzle velocities range between 2,000 and 2,350 foot pounds, making the .444 Marlin a cartridge more than adequate to harvest most game in all of North America.

Hornady recently released .444 Marlin ammo in their new LEVERevolution line, with a reported muzzle velocity of more than 1,650 feet per second and energy levels of more than 1,600 foot pounds at 200 yards.

Cowboy action shooting has recently grown in popularity, and along with it, a demand for rifles chambered in .45-70.

Several manufacturers have responded to the increased demand and are now making lever action rifles in this caliber.

As a result, the sales of .444 Marlin rifles dropped sharply. While demand has fallen off for .444 ammo.

Hunters still respect the cartridge for being a heavy, hard-hitting bullet that works great for hunting in dense brush and for longer shots across a clearing in the woods.

  1. Vanammo

I’ve used this ammo in my Marlin model 444 for the last 10 years. I’ve killed 13 deer with it and none have made it more than 30 yards after the shot. The instant expansion of the FTX bullets is in a class by itself when compared to the wound channels I’ve seen when using soft point and hollow point bullets. My Marlin is my go-to meat gun and Leverevolution is my go-to ammo for that gun. It fills the freezer

  2. Vanammo

I am having trouble finding Marlin 444 shells for my rifle. Not only did I find an excellent choice but great pricing.

  3. Vanammo

During bench firing of an 18″ barrel lever action .444 Marlin Winchester Timberwolf 94 bore sighted to zero at 100 yards, Hornady’s LEVERevolution 265 grain round in .444 Marlin provided consistent groups with about a 3″ drop at an actual 200 yard distance. It was awesome to see trap clays affixed with duck tape to a target explode at this range, effectively nearly doubling the usable range of this rifle with a relatively small amount of compensation for distance. While the other brand’s .444 Marlin round is a great round for big game out to 100-125 yards, Hornady’s .444 Marlin round makes 200 yard shots easily achievable.

  4. Vanammo

I know the .444 marlin has limited options for ammo but you can’t go wrong here. Consistent accuracy from 50 out to 200 yards. Ringing steel with this round gives a strong audible report that’s just cool to hear as compared to other rounds.

  5. Vanammo

    Very accurate

  6. Vanammo

This ammo is very accurate through my Marlin 444P. I could not get anything else (including handloads with jacketed and hardcast bullets) to shoot nearly as good as these. 1″, 3-shot, 100 yard groups are common through my short little brush gun. It is also extremely effective on thin skinned game making a big hole going in, leaving a bigger hole going out which has made what little tracking I have had to do very easy. I would want a tougher bullet for critters that want to fight back, but it’s about as good as it gets for hooved animals within 200 yards.

  7. Vanammo

Absolutely one hole accurate in my 1 in 38″ and 1 in 20″ twist rifles.

  8. Vanammo

I set up a five-foot piece of mobile home, steel I-beam at 40 yards. Expecting the bullet to disintegrate, I was impressed by a neat hole the size of a nickel. This would be a bone crusher if circumstances required.

  9. Vanammo

Very accurate at 100 yards..all shots with in two inches..Recoil very manageable from my H&R handi rifle with 22 inch barrel. Should be very effective on deer and hogs.

  10. Vanammo

I have used this ammunition for 6 years in my Marlin model 444. I have made 6 one shot kills ranging from 40 to 250 yards.this a munition it works well when used in the rifle it is designed for. the only downside is when reloading, you must use Lever revolution bullets. The cases are trimmed .150″ shorter than standard loads to accommodate the longer ogive.

  11. Vanammo

I use this load in a Handi-Rifle .444 Magnum Marlin load. I love the load in that simple little gun for Mississippi’s Primitive Weapon seasons. I have used it for three seasons and have taken 4 deer with it. All shots have been 150 to 175 yards and have been on target with certain and final results. I shot a coyote with it last fall at about 120 and it was a clean and quick finish for that big male. At the range, it punches the black center at 100 yards with great groups.

  12. Vanammo

I feel confident in taking 300 yd shots with this 265gr 444cal hornady LEVERevolution ammo matched with the Cabela’s Lever-Action 265gr 444 cal scope It’s like a match made in heaven.I’m amazed at the kinetic energy this caliber exhibits.

  13. Vanammo

in the 444 marlin these feed perfectly shoot accurately and do not deform in the magizine. they do require slight sighting adjustment for other rounds

  14. Vanammo

I took two coyotes and one whitetail buck the first morning I hunted with these. Highly accurate and worked well in my Marlin XLR. Needless to say it was overkill for the coyotes but the whitetail cut a complete backflip and it didnt waste any meat at all. I managed to save the bullet from the buck, cant wait to weigh it to see how much retention it had.

  15. Vanammo

This bullet does exactly what it says it will do. I shot a 150 lb six point at 250yds in the chest with this round. On small deer I would recommend broad side shots only or a smaller gun, it broke all the ribs on his right side, butterfly’d the entire right back strap and the wound cavity expansion tore a 6 inch whole in his back. I found him facing the opposite direction he was facing when I shot him. I am NOT proud of my choice of shot but the bullet doesn’t lie. I use a 2-7x32mm scope sighted 1″ high at 100yds very accurate.

  16. Vanammo

I made a poor shot on a big doe from 30 yards with this ammo and yet she still went down like a sack of taters. I can easily group my shots within 5″ at 100 yards in my microgroove 1:38 barrel despite the fact that this ammo is not “supposed to shoot well in my gun. Also, had no problem going straight through 2” of bullet-proof glass from 100 yards that would stop a .357 easily from 25 yards. This ammo is great.

  17. Vanammo

Very Humane Kills. I have shot 4 bucks this year with these. All dropped on the spot. Surprisingly little destructive damage to the meat for a 44 caliber bullet. seem to have a tighter pattern and a little more range than the Remingtons.

  18. Vanammo

This ammo is extremely accurate (SMOA) in my Marlin 444. The Remington 240’s were not accurate at all. I am going to hunt with it tonight. Will keep you informed.

  19. Vanammo

Shot 2 whitetail bucks (180 & 220lbs) and a 225lb wild boar last season with this ammo in my Handi-rifle. All 3 dropped in their tracks!

  20. Vanammo

I use this round in my Marlin .444S which has a Lyman peep sight. At fifty yards from a rest, a measured 3/8″ group, a very neat little cloverleaf. Sighted at 1″ high there, this round should be on at 100yds and a few inches low at 125, as far as I will shoot with a peep sight. For comparison, my 1895 with Leupold 1-4x scope in 45-70 with 325grLE shoots no better than that. Of course, sub MOA from both is impressive in my mind.

  21. Vanammo

Great Ammo!!! Shot doe 100 body slammed her, first deer I ever shot that never even kicked. Complete pass through. Very accurate from bench as well. 1″ at 100 yrds from my H&R handi rifle.

  22. Vanammo

This stuff shoots, 1 inch groups at 100 yards!! I just got back from Buck and Boar. I wacked a 260 lb sow with it. It took out 3 ribs on the way in and one on the way out. Tremendous blood trail for 30 yards, at the end of it…. Bacon.

  23. Vanammo

This ammo rocks. I shot an older box that didn’t have 1 in 20″ twist on the label and in my used Marlin 444S with 38″ twist it shot smaller groups (around 1 1/2″ for 5 shots) than the 265gr FP Light Mag.

  24. Vanammo

Im getting 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 inch groups at 100 yards with open irons while shooting at the deep creek range. Cant wait to see how well it performs on elk. This is a follow up of earlier review 2-3-2010: I have hit three shot groups under 1 inch at 100 yards with open irons. Average groups about 1.25 inches. Every kill has been bang flops with gruesome blood spray from massive exit wounds.

  25. Vanammo

Very accurate out of both my H&R Handi Rifles. Velocity was exactly as advertised. My only problem is that this is not a bonded bullet. On the half dozen or so I have recovered the jacket and core have come apart. I would love to see the Leverevolution in a bonded bullet or even the Monoflex.

  26. Vanammo

Good Stuff! Shoot very accurately, feeds perfectly, and hits hard in my Winchester Big Bore 94 Timber Carbine in .444. Hope to use on a nice, fat Wisconsin meat doe next fall.

  27. Vanammo

Shot a mid-sized doe recently with this ammunition, she dropped in 2 steps. Frankly it destroyed her, she was quartering away and it entered mid-chest on the right and exited on the left shoulder. Completely destroyed the left shoulder meat.It worked great, but may be a bit much for whitetail deer.

  28. Vanammo

Performed well – glad the deer did not go far though. I busted an 8-point, 200 pound whitetail, at 70 yards and it went 30 steps and collapsed. Tremendous impact and internal damage, but no exit would and not a drop of blood – even after I back tracked from where the deer dropped. Thought that was strange not to bleed any, but bullet was effective.

  29. Vanammo

VERY VERY accurate, I was very surprised of the accuracy these rounds gave me threw my H&R topped with a Nikon 3-9×50 Prostaff. I consistently got 1.5 3 shot groups at around 120 yards. My 5 shot group yielded a 1.75″ group. I would have given this another star but haven’t had the chance to try this round on any of my 250lb whitetails. Will follow up 😉

  30. Vanammo

First off i love hornady products, but this flex tip bullet isent very tough, nor is the superformance soft point.. When it comes to my handi rifle in .444 marlin as my bear gun i expect a tough bullet that will stop a large animal and not blow apart when hitting soft targets. Ive tested in wetpack, doug fir, water, etc and after seeing the results i am using the rest for range ammo. Accuarcy was good, shot out to about 300yds, brass is quality but not reccomended for anything bigger than 250lbs such as deer, cougar. Hornady, please offer this potential round in a GMX or similar bullet that can be trusted when its needed.
