Brief History of 338 Win Mag Ammo
In 1958, Winchester introduced their 338 Win Mag ammo to a specific group of hunters of large North American game.
The popularity of the cartridge soon spread to Africa, where hunters used it to harvest medium-sized game as well as some large animals.
The .338 used a .375 H&H Magnum case that had been necked down to take the smaller .338 caliber bullet.
This allowed the use of a rather heavy bullet, which meant that with enough powder, a 200 grain soft point bullet could reach 3,000 feet per second and a muzzle energy exceeding 3,800 foot pounds.
The Winchester Model 70 Alaskan was among the first rifles chambered for this cartridge and was designed with the hunter of big Alaskan game in mind.
With a reputation for being one of the best cartridges for hunting elk in use today, the .338 has also been employed with great success for bear hunting.
A great advantage of this cartridge is how well it retains energy at long distances. With the right load, it has nearly 2,000 foot pounds of energy available at 400 yards
– making the effective range of the .338 better than the .375 H&H Magnum.
But all that power and reach comes with a cost. The rifles that fire .338 are built heavily and weigh an average of eight to ten pounds.
More often discussed than gun weight is the recoil factor.
While the .30-06 generates recoil in the range of 15 foot pounds, the .338 Winchester Magnum generates recoil in the range of 30 foot pounds!
This is a significant number for recoil, but it’s not enough to dissuade hunters who need the performance that this cartridge presents.
Several major manufacturers sell rifles chambered for the .338 Winchester Magnum, including Winchester (obviously), Ruger, and Remington.
Weatherby and Savage also make some of the more well known options.
Bolt action rifles are the most common platform, although Browning makes a BAR semi-automatic rifle that is chambered for the .338.
.338 Winchester Magnum ammunition is also for sale from nearly every U.S. manufacturer
. Federal and Hornady sell high-performance ammo for hunting, and their advanced bullet designs make this excellent hunting cartridge even better.

I’m very happy with results of this ammunition in my Winchester 70 push feed. It sighted in perfectly with my redfield accurange scope at 200 through 500 yards and gave me great confidence. I specifically used this combination for longer range (I usually kill elk in timber with 358 win savage 99) on an elk herd that normally is on public land next to a harvested barley field on opening weekend. Both 5x5s were right around 300 yards and fell instantly when hit. Both bulls were hit on the run as the herd was being shot at by other hunters (not calm elk). In my opinion, if you are hunting public land and need a bullet that will drop an elk in his tracks, this ammunition will do it.

GREAT 338 AMMO

Had to WORK with hand loads that would equal / exceed the accuracy afforded by this Federal ammo !!

Great AND great in a short barrel
Vanammo –
This ammo is fantastic. I thought I would point out, this DOES appear to be able to burn all of its powder in a 20 inch barrel. I graphed this many times out of a 20 INCH SAVAGE HOG HUNTER. the average was 2837 and all where close. That makes this a VERY good choice out of a short barrel for elk, etc IMHO.

DEVASTATING PERFORMANCE
Vanammo –
Had an opportunity to compare performance of this 210gr NP with a “Core Lock” on two large coastal black bears, both close to 6’10”. Three .284 CLs disintegrated on same point of shoulder at approx.260y. Finished bear at 15′ with frontal chest shot, after following him into brush. The NP 210gr from .338 took 2nd bear at 311y and he disappeared, simply falling and sliding down steep slope without even a twitch! Left a silver dollar size exit hole but he was DRT. IMPRESSIVE. DrBill…

Reliability
Vanammo –
In the old days (40 years ago) I hand loaded the 210 grain Nosler Partition because you couldn’t buy it in commercial cartridge form. Those days are gone but the 210 Nosler Partition effectively kills elk with quick reliability. The bullet has always performed as advertised and, at least in my experience, it can be found on the opposite side of the carcass with good expansion and deadly penetration. I will use this exact bullet until they lay me 6 feet under.

Love this round for deer,Elk. I took a bull elk in Montana at 550 yards. Dropped it in his tracks. WILL USE AGAIN! Found the bullet fully mushroomed Didn’t cause too much damage to the meat. Love the round. Also I was getting 1/2 inch groups in my custom Weatherby Mark V at 125 yards. And at 300 yards I can get about 1 moa. And at 550 I can get about 3 or 4 moa.

Great load! Used it on a black bear hunt in Canada. It consistently prints 1″ groups at 100yds from my Browning A-Bolt. Recoil is mild compared to heavier .338WM loads. The bullet performed great on the bear. Dropped her right on the spot. Bullet went straight through both shoulders, and did not cause excessive damage to the cape or the meat. Highly recommend.

I lived in AK for five years and this was my round. I’ve shot Trophy Blk Bear, Caribou, and a Musk Ox. If you only wish to shoot once this is your round. 210 gr doesn’t hurt as bad as 250 or 250HE and still makes a big exit hole. Accuracy is great.
Vanammo –
The ammo shoots great unfortunately I will not be able to hunt with it. The back of the case swells after shooting it making it very hard to eject I have to hit the bolt to get it to come back.

Purchased based upon other reviews. Found this ammo shot very well in my Savage 338 win mag. I harvested a moose and elk this year with this 210 Grain Nosler ammo. Would recommend this load, as it has the needed ballistics for long range shooting and doesn’t kick too hard.

Took an elk in Montana at 310 yards. It ran 25 yards and dropped like a stone. The Nosler bullet went straight through the bull and left devastation behind. Very accurate. Highly recommended.

I have shot elk out to 250 yards and get full penetration through bones. I have also shot antelope at 330 and 410 yards and get great expansion with an exit hole I could fit my fist in. I also get consistent accuracy (sub moa). I know several others who shoot the 210 grain in .338wm and get sub moa groups.

This ammo shoots around .900 inch groups at 100 yards, out of my LAW professional rifle. It averages 40 fps slower then the listed velocity out of my rifle. The fps veriation for 20 rounds was double that of my own handload with this bullet, I believe this resulted in the larger group sizes. As my own handload shoots around 1/2 MOA out of my rifle. It also prints at the same point of aim as my own hand load of this bullet at 200 yards. I have never had a Nosler Partition fail, or Not perform as expected. Bottom line is I trusted this load for a bull Elk hunt in heavy Grizzly country.

Good quality load, sub MOA in L.A.W. professional rifle

The ammo shoots great unfortunately I will not be able to hunt with it. The back of the case swells after shooting it making it very hard to eject I have to hit the bolt to get it to come back. I can shoot hornady super performance with 0 issues and no case swelling. I would not have thought factory ammo would be “too” hot
