Description
224 Valkyrie Brass
The 224 Valkyrie Brass was introduced in late 2017 by Federal. Unlike many calibers in the past that have been a joint effort between an ammo company and a single firearm company, the Valkyrie is already being chambered by several AR-15 manufacturers such as LaRue, JP Enterprises, and CMMG as well as several barrel makers such as Satern and Lothar-Walther.
The 224 Valkyrie Brass is touted for its long range capabilities. While not the fastest factory .22 caliber AR chambering, its short fat case allows it to fit longer, high BC bullets. This means that it can keep a 90 grain Sierra bullet supersonic to 1300 yards, with much less recoil than other calibers. AR type rifles can be converted by changing the barrel and using a 6.8 SPC bolt and magazines.
224 Valkyrie Brass Overview
Starline Brass prides itself on producing the highest quality brass case available. Their brass is comprised of 70% copper and 30% zinc and is vertically drawn during the manufacturing process which results in more uniform wall thickness. Cases are annealed between each draw to ensure consistent metallurgy in all lots. Each brass case is hand inspected to guarantee the highest quality possible.
Starline Brass is located in Sedalia, MO and has been in business for over 30 years. Trust Starline for your next reloads, you won’t be disappointed. New, unprimed brass. This is not loaded ammunition. Bulk brass should be full-length sized, trimmed and chamfered before loading.
224 Valkyrie Brass preparation
With bulk rifle brass you may sometimes notice a few case mouths are “out of round” or slightly dented below the shoulder. These imperfections occur in the final tumbling wash operation after the case mouth has been annealed. Brass manufacturers are aware of the case cosmetics and have worked to mitigate it, but due to equipment design, denting may still occur. Minor dents are normally removed in the first firing and will not affect case life or performance. On non-plated brass, you may also notice all the anneal stain might not be polished off, which may give the case neck a pinkish color. With some smaller caliber cases you may notice the case mouths to be slightly belled.
With all new rifle brass, you should first straighten out the case and case mouth, then chamfer and debur the case mouth inside and out. To straighten the case mouth, run the case part way into the sizer die and let the expander ball straighten the brass. To prevent the case neck from stretching, be sure to lubricate the case neck inside the case mouth.
If you are using Nickel plated brass, special care must be taken to lubricate the cases prior to sizing them. Nickel plating is harder than brass and the cases require more effort in sizing. In the event a case becomes stuck, purchase a stuck case remover; don’t use pliers, screwdrivers or other common household tools which could damage your sizing die.

Hornady on 224 Valkyrie Brass
At Hornady,® brass is the foundation for what could be the most memorable shot of your lifetime. Extra time and care is taken in the creation of our cases, producing smaller lots that meet strict quality standards.
Our cases offer reloaders excellent uniformity in wall thickness, weight and internal capacity. We measure for consistently tight wall concentricity and even run our cases through a pressure calibration test to ensure uniform case expansion during firing.
Our cases allow proper seating of the bullet, not only in the case, but in the chamber as well. High quality brass contributes to consistent charges and pressures.
Concentricity helps to ensure proper bullet seating in both the case and the chamber of your firearm. Higher concentricity also aids in a uniform release of the bullet on firing, for optimal velocity and accuracy.
Benchrest shooters have long known that uniform case wall thickness is vital to accuracy. We manufacture to extremely tight tolerances to ensure this critical element is as consistent as possible.
We treat Hornady brass as the foundation for an accurate cartridge, not a commodity. Because we take greater care in its creation youll get more reloads from Hornady brass.
Every single Hornady case, regardless of the lot in which it was produced, is virtually identical to other Hornady cases in the same caliber. For you, this means consistent pressures, velocity and accuracy every time.
Results: 224 Valkyrie Starline Brass Torture Test
Reloading 224 Valkyrie is pretty much the same as reloading most other bottleneck rifle cartridges. However, there are some unique considerations when you’re dealing with a “hotrod” magnum cartridge like 224 Valkyrie. One of these considerations is brass life/longevity- namely the primer pockets. I’ve heard a lot of stories of 224 Valkyrie brass only lasting 3-or-so firings, so this is a big concern within the reloading community. So I thought I would put my Starline 224 Valkyrie brass cases “to the test”. How long will my brass last? Check out the video, and read on!
The Test Methodology
For this torture test, I decided to focus on a few specific things:
- Primer pocket longevity – how many firings does it take before these primer pockets go “out of spec”?
- Brass flow: how many firings and re-sizings can this brass take before trimming is needed?
- Overall case condition: cracks, etc.
- Case head swipe and “pounding”
Since 224 Valkyrie is a “hotrod” cartridge, I decided to go with a heavy-bullet-hot-load scenario, and one that I’ve also had good results with at the range:

This was my first time using starline brass. I was really surprised at the uniformity of it. I usually use Nosler custom or Lapua. I am on my 3rd reload of the brass with no issues at all.

I’m several hundred brass into the star line with only one defective brass and it was an obvious neck defect. Counts have been accurate in each box. Primer pockets are way better than federal

I bought this brass for the new savage prairie bolt in 224. After three firings I am impressed with the way it is holding up. 1 trimming in 3, holding primers beautifully, and the weight from case to case, great! Well worth the money!
Vanammo –
Good brass. Seems to be uniform.

Lasts longer than another brand I made the mistake of buying, & I can get 5 or more firings out of these before the necks split. They feel like sturdy cases when sized, compared to the other brand. I had a custom bolt-action rifle made for me & these cases shoot well. Stock up when you can.
