Based on the need for an improved small bore cartridge with high velocity,
Hornady Manufacturing and Ruger Firearms joined together in 2004 to create the .204 Ruger.
When it was introduced, the .204 Ruger was the speediest production .20 caliber cartridge in existence.
The case was based on a slightly modified .222 Remington Magnum, making it the perfect round to hunt varmints.
They necked down the .222 case to 0.204 inches, moved the shoulder of the cartridge forward.
And changed its angle to 30 degrees.
Rounds fired from cases with these changes in dimensions achieved an exceedingly high velocity .
And sub MOA accuracy at 100 yards, yet the cartridge generated less recoil than other rounds in its class.
Bullets commonly weigh between 30 and 45 grains, and are available in soft point boat tail, JHP and V-MAX configurations.
Muzzle velocity for the .204 Ruger varies between about 3,500 feet per second to more than 4,200 feet per second.
Muzzle energy generated by bullets going this fast is more than 1,200 foot pounds.
The .204 really shines in its downrange performance. If a 32 grain bullet is zeroed at 200 yards,
the bullet will only be 0.6 inches high at 100 yards, and will only have dropped 13 inches at 300 yards.
Max range for the cartridge is 500 yards, at which point the bullet will have dropped 29 inches.
Even at 500 yards, the bullet velocity is nearly 1,900 feet per second, and bullet energy is more than 250 foot pounds.
Ruger continues to make rifles chambered for the .204 Ruger cartridge, as do Mossberg,
Remington, and Savage among others. Rifles with a bolt action are very common, as are single shot rifles.

The 204 Ruger is the Ultimate prairie dog cartridge. I took a Ruger Target Model with me to Wyoming this year. It is fast, flat and accurate. It would often send the little critters flying! The cartridge is less sensitive to the wind than I thought it would be. The most amazing thing about the round was that even after extended shooting sessions, the barrel never got too hot to touch. I see a bright future for this cartridge.

I use my 204 for woodchucks and fox. This ammo i have found to work and shoot the best in my Ruger.

I harvested 2 Bobcats last winter at roughly 100 yards with the 32gr rounds with no exit wounds. The first cat was an accidental headshot where I would have expected a large exit wound. The second was in the front shoulder broadside. It left a hole the diameter of the bullet in the fur. As soon as it went threw the fur it was very destructive to the hit shoulder exploding on impact but absolutely nothing on the offside shoulder. I am a little concerned with the lack of penetration when it comes to larger animals such as coyotes if I hit bone but I have not shot one with them yet. Others have stated that it works well on coyotes as well so I will give it a shot. This round is also as accurate as the other reviews state threw my Savage.

Like the title says, STUPID ACCURATE! I routinely make clean kills on varmints out to 300 yards with little trouble. 5 shot groups at 100 yards often leave 1 ragged hole and a smile on my face! Ruger 77/204 and AR/204 platform. Buy this ammo!

Very flat and very accurate. This is a great round for varmints & yotes. 300+ yds for yotes pushes the terminal results of 32 grain Vmax. This round shoots so flat that there is not much consideration needed for drop out to 300. I love shooting this in my AR platform – very little felt recoil.
