10 percussion caps overview:

what is 10 percussion caps

10 percussion caps are small metal cups filled with a shock-sensitive explosive compound that is used to ignite black powder or other propellant chemicals in a muzzle-loaded firearm. They are typically used in older style firearms such as muzzle-loading muskets or rifles and were popular in the 19th century. They are still available today, although more modern ignition systems such as electric primers or self-contained cartridges are more commonly used. Percussion caps are known for their reliability and ease of use and are still used in some traditional hunting and target shooting activities.

They are used to ignite black powder or other propellant chemicals in muzzle-loaded firearms. They were popular in the 19th century but are more rarely used today due to the emergence of more modern ignition systems such as electric primers or self-contained cartridges. Despite their reduced use, percussion caps are still available on the market and are reliable and easy to use, so they are still popular with hunters and target shooters for some traditional activities.

importance of 10 percussion caps

10 percussion caps are an important part of many aspects of hunting and target shooting. As one of the most reliable and easy to use primers for muzzle-loaded firearms, they are still found in many traditional hunting and target shooting activities. They are also commonly used in historical reenactment events due to their accuracy and reliability. The percussion cap also serves to ignite other types of propellant chemicals, such as smoke-less powders, and can be used as a backup for firearms that don’t have electric primers or self-contained cartridges. Ultimately, they are an important part of the muzzle-loading sports, most notably in hunters and target shooters looking for traditional authenticity and reliability in their guns.

history of 10 percussion caps

10 percussion caps originated in the 19th century and were quickly adopted by the hunting and target shooting communities. They are small metal caps that contain a primer compound that is ignited by the striking of a firing pin. This compound then ignites black powder or other propellant chemicals when the gun is fired. Over time, modern inventions such as electric primers and self-contained cartridges began to replace the percussion cap, but they maintained their popularity in more traditional activities such as reenactment events. Even today, 10 percussion caps are available on the market, offering hunters and target shooters the reliability and ease of use they need, all while preserving traditional authenticity.

applications of 10 percussion caps

10 percussion caps have a wide variety of applications. They are most commonly used to ignite black powder or other propellant chemicals in a muzzle-loaded firearm. They are also used in some traditional hunting and target shooting activities, as well as many historical reenactment events. Additionally, they can be used to ignite other types of propellant chemicals, such as smokeless powders, and they provide a reliable backup option for firearms that don’t have electric primers or self-contained cartridges. In short, percussion caps are an important part of the muzzle-loading sports, offering users both reliability and a touch of nostalgic authenticity.

who invented 10 percussion caps

10 percussion caps were invented by gunsmiths in the 19th century who sought to improve upon the flintlock ignition system. They introduced the idea of a primer compound contained within a small metal cap that is ignited by the striking of a firing pin. This simple design quickly revolutionized the muzzle-loaded firearm industry and made muzzle-loading guns much easier and quicker to use. The invention of the 10 percussion cap led to the development of newer, more modern ignition systems such as electric primers and self-contained cartridges.

adavantages of 10 percussion caps

10 percussion caps have several advantages. They are reliable and easy to use, making them great for traditional hunting and target shooting activities. Additionally, they are low cost and relatively easy to find, so it’s easy to replenish your supply. Finally, they don’t require electricity or any other external power source, making them easy to use in any environment. These caps have several advantages that make them a popular choice for traditional hunting and target shooting activities. Finally, they generate enough force to ignite black powder and other propellant chemicals, which makes them suitable for muzzle-loaded firearms.

disadvantages of 10 percussion caps

10 percussion caps are known for their reliable performance, however, there are a few potential drawbacks. First, while they are reliable and easy to use, they are more difficult to load than other primer systems. Additionally, they are more prone to misfires due to environmental factors such as humidity or moisture. Furthermore, because they are time consuming to load, they are not as desirable for quick succession shooting. Finally, they become less effective over time, so they must be replaced periodically. Despite these drawbacks, 10 percussion caps remain a popular and reliable choice amongst hunters and target shooters.

Another potential downside of using 10 percussion caps is that they generate more noise than other ignition systems, and therefore, require proper hearing protection when using in a shooting range. Additionally, if 10 percussion caps are stored for a long time, they are likely to become hardened and need to be replaced.

  1. Vanammo

The number 10 caps have a longer skirt than the number 11’s. Therefore, they have more surface area to fit onto the tapered nipples. The number 10 has a height of .066″ The number 11 has a height of .047″ That’s the basic difference.

  2. Vanammo

My experience is my Piettas use 10s, and my Ubertis use 11s. I pinch the 11s just a bit if they need to be snugged up. Pro tip: use a wood dowel or pencil eraser to push the caps on. They probably will never go off while putting them on, but if one ever does your thumb will never be the same.

  3. Vanammo

CCI No. 10 Caps ended up fitting my original Remington .44 perfectly. They also fit both of my Cimmaron Colt 1860s perfectly. So, I am very happy with this, since finding the right Cap makes a world of difference from Caps which are too loose or too tight.

  4. Vanammo

These caps work exactly as I expected.

  5. Vanammo

I’ve been using another brand of caps. I decided to try CCI caps and I found them to be superior to my old brand. They fire a little hotter so I get excellent ignition every time. I’ve had miss fires in the past, but no more since I switched.

  6. Vanammo

Haven’t gotten a reply from company but will #10s fit a #11 nipple? I called MIDWAYUSA maybe three months ago to order #11 caps and was told they would be in stock the middle of July. There are only a few days left in July. This is the 24th day of July.Number 10s are coming to this store but I believe these won’t fit a #11 nipple. Anyone have any percussion caps for sell trade or give away? I need these caps to just shoot my rifles and pistols so I would appreciate any information where they(caps) may be obtained.

  7. Vanammo

Very reliable and affordable Product. Buy in bulk or the Hazardous Material Fee will not make an online purchase worthwhile.

  8. Vanammo

These are the right fit for your blackpowder revolver. Price is ridiculous, but then what isn’t these days? CCI is always top notch. The limit on the number of cans is what makes the Hazmat charge so hard to swallow

  9. Vanammo

I can use the CCI percussion caps on all my black powder pistols and rifles. The fit is excellent and do not fall off. I have had some non ignition issues but overall I’m happy with them.

  10. Vanammo

Reliable, no misfires. A bit too small for cap and ball pistols. They will fit but it takes extra time to seat them so the cylinder turns. Number 11 is what you need. CCI 11 is the same size as Remington 10

  11. Vanammo

These caps do not fit any of my three BP revolvers. They are too tight for the nipples and don’t seat properly. When you do get them seated far enough on the nipple to be able to rotate the cylinder, you will get 80% misfires on the first try. They will fire on the second. But, when they fire, make sure you have first aid handy. I got a bad burn from a flying piece of cap on a light load in my 1851 Navy model and a piece of cap stuck in my trigger finger from my 1858 Army model. This has never happened with the Remington #10 caps.

  12. Vanammo

I have tried these percussion caps on a half dozen different BP firearms and they almost never ignite the first time when struck by the hammer, only about an fifth of the time. It doesn’t matter if the caps are hand seated or if done by a capper, they don’t work all the same. However they will always ignite the second time the hammer hits them. The caps behaved this way straight out of the packaging, even though I keep them stored in a dry environment. On another note, at least 10 of the ones I’ve tried to fire simply don’t have a powder charge in them. I would not buy these caps again, unfortunately I still have 700 to 800 of them to get through before they’re all gone. For comparison, Remington caps work just fine.

  13. Vanammo

No. 11 Caps The No. 11 cap has an inside diameter of approximately 0.17 inch and fits a greater variety of black powder guns than any other cap. It is the standard cap for muzzle-loading pistols, rifles and shotguns. For this reason, ammunition factories produce more No.11s than any other percussion cap. No. 10 Caps No. 10 percussion caps are slightly smaller than No. 11 caps, and are the proper size for black powder cap-and-ball revolvers. The difference in diameter is minimal, and revolver owners often successfully use No. 11 caps because of their greater availability. The shooter who has problems with caps falling off the nipples must purchase the less-common No. 10 caps, or replace the nipples with a larger size that will work with the No. 11 caps

  14. Vanammo

The CCI number 10 caps work well with my Uberti percussion revolvers, while my Pietta revolvers work well with CCI number 11 caps. However, I recommend trying a tin of several brands and sizes of cap before purchasing a substantial quantity.

  15. Vanammo

    i will buy this again
